Black Wolf is the second book in Eileen Merriman’s Black Spiral Trilogy. It is an action-packed and emotional story for both the readers and the characters themselves, Violet Black and Johnno Fletcher, who are plotting their escape from the torturous Spiral Foundation. The Foundation is a scientific research laboratory which seems legitimate and almost harmless. But Violet and Johnno know better.
After they have escaped, the two drive further and further away from the Foundation. Despite Johnno deeply hurting Violet’s feelings when they were on their mission to Berlin (in book one – Violet Black), the two become much closer. Read more

“I want to cry. I want to scream.
But I won’t. I can’t. If I fall apart now, then we might as well be dead.”
This is not the first, and definitely not the last, of many life-and-death situations in Black Wolf by Eileen Merriman. Action-packed from beginning to end, prepare yourself for a gripping, and sometimes terrifying story of a futuristic world on the brink of destruction.
Phoenix and Violet are prisoners at the Foundation: a scientific research centre. But this ‘research’ is constructed around tests run on humans – teens that are somehow evolving to gain powers. Read more
First book in the Black Spiral Trilogy

When I first look at this book, the thing that draws me in is the cover: a purple ring with a soaring purple hawk inside it. The purple mist and funky lettering let me know this will be a great sci-fi adventure.
I couldn’t speak, but I was trying so hard to communicate and then… then… I pushed. And something, someone pushed back. Her name is Violet. Violet, but she is sunshine yellow, and I need to find her because I think she might be like me. Read more

Twiggy is the sporty Sophie, Mac is the smartest Sophie and Sophie A is the prettiest Sophie; the missing Sophie.
A Trio of Sophies is a novel written by Eileen Merriman about the mysterious disappearance of Sophie Abercrombie. Sophie Abercrombie, Sophie MacKenzie and Sophie Twiggs have been best friends since they were little; they practically grew up together. The tight knit trio are always seen hanging out and never leave each other’s sides until one piece of the puzzle is lost. Eileen Merriman’s third YA novel, Invisibly Breathing follows the story of the social outcast, Felix Catalan, and the unknown new kid, Bailey Hunter, in a journey of self acceptance and love that could have the potential to create something neither boy could have imagined.
After an encounter with Bailey in first his Physics class and then when he joined the judo club, Felix finds himself being more and more drawn toward Bailey and he can’t seem to figure out why. Bailey catches himself watching Felix out of the corner of his eye when he thinks nobody is watching him. Read more
Pieces of You

“It was one of those books where you had to read one more chapter, then one more.”
Pieces of You, Eileen Merriman’s first published novel, is exactly as Rebecca McQuilten puts it when talking about one of the books in her extensive collection. After reading one of her other novels, Catch Me When You Fall, I had high expectations for Pieces of You that Merriman did not fail to meet. Easily my favourite book by Eileen Merriman, Pieces of You deserves all of the praise it receives; it is a beautifully told, undeniably raw, and extremely emotional read. Read more
Catch Me When You Fall

“‘Promise me you won’t try to die,’ I said. ‘Ever.’
‘Promise me you won’t either,’ he countered.
‘It’s not really something I can control.’”
Catch Me When You Fall, the second novel written by Eileen Merriman, is an extremely emotional read. Though the novel may have a classic, clichéd storyline of two young teens finding love for the first time, Eileen Merriman succeeds in hooking the reader with a plot twist of two common, severe diseases that have the opportunity to interfere with the young and irrational love between the teens. Invisibly Breathing is Eileen Merriman’s third novel, and it offers more than your typical romance. Bullying, homophobia and being an outsider – Merriman tackles plenty of tough topics in this moving and delicate novel.
After the success of Merriman’s previous two novels, Pieces of You and Catch Me when You Fall, I had high expectations for this book, and Invisibly Breathing certainly doesn’t fail to live up to the standards of Merriman’s previous works. At its heart, Invisibly Breathing is a typical YA romance, but offers more than your average love story. Read more
Pieces of You

Pieces of You is the typical YA coming-of-age novel that surprisingly offers more than a cliche. Not least, it is uniquely set in a familiar setting of Auckland. Eileen Merriman creates genuine teenage characters – one aspect within the YA genre that often feels lacking or underdeveloped, and so is much appreciated when done right.
The story revolves around 15-turning-16-year-old Rebecca McQuilten, who has recently moved up to Auckland from Dunedin with her parents. However, a warning: the very first line can be triggering. Although it’s refreshing that Merriman does not dwell much on Rebecca’s backstory, the point at which she chooses entry into the plot can be quite confronting. Read more
